Making use of the sun’s energy with photovoltaic system and battery storage

Spain: quail farmer lowers electricity bill with SunFarm and SunBox from Big Dutchman

It’s an issue most farmers know very well: high energy costs and the search for savings potentials are an important part of the daily work on many farms. For a Spanish farmer from Sinarcas, a municipality near Valencia, the photovoltaic (PV) system and battery storage from Big Dutchman turned out to be the ideal solution for these issues. Looking for the optimal equipment for his quail house, the Spaniard selected SunFarm and SunBox. His choice resulted in a high degree of independence from the power grid, significantly lower operating costs and, last but not least, more sustainability.

Project details

SunFarm

The system has a maximum capacity of 40.18 kWp, which is generated by 98 modern solar panels, each with a size of 1.72 x 1.13 metres and a power of 410 W. The solar modules are anchored to supports that were specifically developed for this type of roof, thus ensuring permanent stability.

The system also comprises three hybrid inverters with a power of 15 kW each. The inverters convert solar power into alternating current: electricity that can be fed into the grid. Due to the PV system, the inverters are able to continue generating power even during a blackout or in regions where reliable power supply is not guaranteed.

SunBox

The core part of the system in Sinarcas is a lithium iron phosphate battery with a storage capacity of 28 kWh. SunBox stores any excess energy generated during sunny periods for later use, which ensures maximum energy efficiency and availability any time of the day.

Photovoltaic system: installation and operation

Before installation started, Big Dutchman engineers analysed the project extensively, including factors such as

  • location and orientation of the building;
  • current power consumption;
  • loads during the day;
  • shading.

The system that was finally installed has the ideal size and comes with an attractive amortisation period: the project in Sinarcas will pay off within just four years. This short period ensures not only a quick return on investment, but also provides the Spanish farmer with impressive independence from the public grid at a degree of 54.2 %.

Control

The PV system is easy to control via computer, smartphone or tablet – from the house’s service room or even from your couch.

Conclusion

With energy prices continuing to rise, PV systems are a real option that can significantly help reduce the operating costs of poultry houses (and other industrial buildings). Solar power is not only a good idea because it is profitable: it is also completely sustainable.
